What actually removes iron

Which fix you need depends on the form the iron is in. Clear water that turns rusty after sitting is dissolved ferrous iron, and a softener can handle low levels of it. Water that comes out of the tap already orange is ferric iron, and it needs an oxidizing or air-injection filter — a softener will foul quickly. Carbon cartridges will clog within weeks on iron-heavy well water.
